Your horse may have a sleep disorder. Check out the Equus website or google articles by Joe Bertone, DVM re: sleep deprivation. He may not be getting REM sleep (deep state) because it hurts to lie down or because he feels insecure lying down in a pasture by himself. This is exactly like videos...

Thanks for this video! It is my favorite race of all time.
I agree that he was wasted in the shorter races. He passed stamina and toughness on to his son, Good Night Shirt, two-time winner of the Eclipse award for steeplechaser (hurdler?).
