I spent half my life growing up in seaport cities like Virginia Beach, VA, Charleston, SC, and Seattle, WA. Grunge had a profound effect on my teen angst persona. We spent four years in Memphis, TN, where the roots of blues crawled through me and left permanent impressions on my soul. The other half was spent in Genoa, WV, where my gracious grandparents raised me on a small farm while my dad was away on duty. I was the son of a Navy chief, born outside Manila, in the Philippine Islands, during the corrupt and brutal Marcos Administration. We made it to the U.S. in 1977 and never returned. The acoustic mastery of Appalachian bluegrass had a resonant influence on my music development. The multiple harmonies that accompanied deep, soulful singers like Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs would eventually make their way into my own music. Concocting dark yet soulful acoustic melodies and often blending the tribal gyrations of African drums and Native American influences, I make an honest effort to power through with the gritty soul of an old prisoner crying the Delta Blues. Its likeChris Cornell, Janis Joplin, and Jewel had a threesome, out of which an infused lovechild was bornand that child was kidnapped by African slaves, fell in love with one perfectly beautiful gypsy after another and was then force fed acid while locked away in a dirt cell on an abandoned island somewhere off the Ivory Coast. Spinning one exotic story after another, I pray I bring, at least, an interesting new style to the acoustic world.
