Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Local government prepares for everyday emergencies and potential disasters. However, emergencies or disasters can quickly overwhelm the community's immediate response capability. While adjacent jurisdictions, State and Federal resources can activate to help, there may be short or long-term delays. The primary reason for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is to give citizens the decision-making, organizational, and practical skills to provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training, and collect disaster intelligence that will assist professional responders with prioritization and allocation of resources. In essence, CERTs are auxiliary first responders and a critical asset to the community. During non-emergency, CERT members take an active role in safety, emergency and disaster preparedness initiatives/projects in their community. CERT volunteers can also support their community by distributing and/or installing smoke alarms, providing various services at special events such as fairs, conventions, parades, sporting events, concerts and much more. The CERT program is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens can make a difference.
