1 gal from 39F to 70F = 31 degrees x 8 (lbs =weight of 1 gal) =248 BTU's
1 cubic foot of natural gas can produce around 1000 BTUs
248 btu /3 min = 500 btu/ 6min = 5000 btu/hr
avg gas water heaters are 40,000 btu/hr
so we got 1/8th the power of a gas water heater from this little J pipe
on a handful of wood pellets
to double check the calc..31F in 3 min = 10f/gal /min = 50-140F in
9 min per gal so 10 gal to 140f in 90min and that happens to be the average
recovery time of a std water heater but 1/4 less volume..so the math
for the BTU's vs the water temp yeild and recovery comparison is close.

One of the advantages of a long pex loop inside your hot water storage tank is that as cold water comes in , it has to push the X (depending on loop length)number of gallons of preheated water out ahead of itself..whereas if it was just a x gallon tank inside the hot tank..the incoming cold water would mix immediately lowering the output temp.

Sounds like we have the same world views! Gotta take care of ourselves nowadays since our government seems to be out to get us! Great ideas for growing food and conserving energy! Awesome work. Thanks for sharing!

You're right. That sure is a lot of heat going up the chimney. When the oil company claims that their oil burner is 95% efficient they mean that the combustion is 95% efficient... Half the heat goes up the chimney,,
Time to go totally solar and save some serious money on fuel..
