Chaz McKinney throws himself wholly into everything he does. His music is unclassifiable; his diverse range of
influences is massive; and his introspective lyrics glimmer boldly in an industry of pop gems consisting of little over twenty words apiece.
With the release of his new album, "Places I Called Home...", Chaz McKinney is ushering in a new era of popular music. An era in which lyrics shine boldly overtop of crystal clear production; an era in which the vintage sounds of the 70's and 80's mesh with the modern rock scene; and era where emotion takes the center stage. The extravagant tenor voice that comes out of Chaz McKinney's mouth is not one you'd usually expect from a fifteen year old boy. Well matured beyond his years, you can honestly say that "age is just a number" to describe his musical styling's.
"Places I Called Home..." has a certain charm to it that will appeal to a wide range of ages. From the opening pop punk charm of "Put Me on the Back shelf." and it's alt-country, harmonica-heavy "Another Train Home" to the shocking reggae jive of "Now or Later" and the piano-driven, Elton John-esque finale "Hit the Ground", this is an incredibly easily relatable record. Whereas the mysterious funk-rocker "Hello Operator" and the delta-blues-punk rocker "Greater Chicago" showcase McKinney's inane lyrical prowess, tracks like "Rain" and "Half-Heart" pedestal his knack for catchy melodies and theatricality. The albums centerpiece, "Better" shows off a soulful side, where McKinney bares his emotions and seems most at home.
With real lyrics that will pepper the Myspace and Facebook statuses across America, and the use of insanely matured vocals, Chaz McKinney's 9-song opus is a must have in everyone's music collection. There is something on this record for everyone and the music industry better prepare itself, because Chaz McKinney is going to take off.
