About Reason is the light
Beauty and virtue in religion is only as pure and honorable as the innate moral acumen of the individual.
FAITH DEFINED:
If rational judgment is based on the principles of reason and understanding; and if skepticism and doubt require the suspension of judgment in the exact proportion in which understanding is inchoate; then faith is literally "trust in ignorance."
"In all stages of education the influence of superstition is disasterous." - Bertrand Russell
"The gods offer no rewards for intellect. There was never one yet that showed any interest in it..." - Mark Twain
"Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense." - Carl Sagan
"In so far as a scientific statement speaks about reality, it must be falsifiable; and in so far as it is not falsifiable, it does not speak about reality."
- Karl Popper

An ex-Christian who was emotionally and faithfully bound by thoughts of everlasting life, bliss, and Jesus' kindness and forgiveness. I overwhelmingly thought that I had a relationship with a loving God; while at the same time being totally unaware how odd it should be that I was somehow born fortuitously into the correct religion, and given the option to know who Jesus was and to receive forgiveness, while millions of others were not. Upon years of reflection I could not avoid the realization of how selfish and ignorant this notion was and the less I could reconcile the idea of infinite benevolence with a Creator who was not equally concerned for both the temporal and eternal well-being of all people. Finally, the refreshing and sobering abandonment of self-serving piety and the I know-the-divine-truth attitude has led me down a more humble and enlightening path of discovery and understanding that I had never before thought possible; beginning with accepting the undeniable fact every single religious text was written, edited, and copied by fallible and wishful-thinking human beings - the Bible merely being one of them.If you want easy answers and warm thoughts, take up folklore or religion. If you honestly want truth and understanding - regardless of how undesirable it may be or how uncomfortable and insignificant it might make you feel - exercise the miracle of your mind and try thinking critically. This approach is much more difficult, and requires more bravery, but it is also more honorable and admirable, and immeasurably more rewarding, because sharing, criticizing, and reshaping ideas is the key to growth and understanding; ensuring we can be optimistic that education and knowledge will conquer fear, wishful thinking, ignorance, bigotry, and intolerance. The truth will set you free.
THE INADEQUACY OF FAITH
"With faith one can believe anything because God can accomplish anything." - Michael Shermer
"A wise man proportions his belief to the evidence." - David Hume
The more we learn about the Universe and reality the more we realize how little we know and just how susceptible to error our interpretations of it can be. Thus, people should always be open to the possibility that their ideas or beliefs could be wrong - even in the presence of what is felt to be sufficient evidence. But faith, by definition, is belief that is reinforced emotionally and has no healthy interest in physical evidence at all. Indeed, very frequently, faith is viewed by the faithful as even more virtuous, or even more real, the more scarce the physical evidence is. If it is by reason and sound judgement that caution should be taken in examining claims of certainty made in the presence of supporting evidence, what is to be made of those which are believed to be acquired in the absence of evidence?
Consider further the fact that one particular faith claims to have knowledge that contradict those established by another - each of which are equally certain of their own unique validity, employ the same double standard of not requiring demonstrable evidence, and hold the same contempt for human reason - revealing clearly that any conflict between them is not only inevitable but is also, on rational grounds, entirely incurable. Contrast such blatant hypocrisy and absurdity to the rational world of honest inquiry and discovery, where doubt is encouraged and observable evidence is valued above all; when evaluating the factual integrity of claims based on the emotional conviction of faith instead of the physical evidence, all may as well be equally true, or rather, equally false.
THE POWER OF SCIENCE
"Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." - Carl Sagan
Theories in science are not merely ideas (hypotheses), and they are even more valuable than individual facts. They are actually used to explain the relationship between groups of facts and for predicting specific and observable future phenomena - if they are observed to make inaccurate predictions, or are not supported by the results, the theories are thrown out. Peer-review by other experts in the same field ensures the integrity of a theory and is the key to eliminating human bias and error - the survival of this rigorous and critical process is the reason there is nothing stronger and nothing that cohesively represents the facts and reality better than a theory.
Einstein's General Theory of Relativity:
Gravity and space-time are the realities the theory (equation) is designed to explain and make observable and testable predictions about, such as their mechanics and effects.
Darwin's Theory of Evolution:
Evolution is the reality that the theory is designed to explain and make observable and testable predictions about, such as its mechanisms and processes (natural selection, speciation, mutation, adaptation etc.)
@zam4446 And who is the source of the "evil one"? It all comes back to God doesn't it? You say "for without sin there cannot be choice - and without choice, there cannot be love." Wrong. If God existed before evil, and God is the source of love and has the ability to choose, then love and choice ...
