I really didn't like GNOME 3 and Unity when they were first released to the public, but the way they are now, I can't even decide on which one I want to use. Guess I'll go with GNOME 3 for increased flexibility and for ease of installation on ArchLinux :)

If you want to see what Linux is like in a "raw" kind of state, you should try a minimal distribution like Arch Linux, which comes with nothing except a command line and a (software-)package management system.
