I was born in the mid 1950's, I'm married and I have two children. Most of my videos are just light amusement; things that I felt like sharing with people within my family as well as anyone else I happen to give my channel name to. If you found my videos through random surfing, I welcome you and look forward to reading your comments. Subscribe if you like, friend if you care to.About "Catawallupin"
Back in the early eighties, I was briefly the house bassist at a club on Market Square in downtown Knoxville run by a musician named Lee Miles Stone. Lee had a manner of speech about him that wasn't familiar to me. He would say things like: "I gotta see a man about a dog" when he needed to use the bathroom. I asked him to explain that one to me and even after hearing his explanation, I didn't get it. Another phrase he used that I never heard anywhere else was: "you cats, man, you cats, man, you cats." His speech was free and joyful and he had an entertainer's personality; always the showman.
Lee asked me one night whether I minded if some friends of his "sat in" during the next set. I said that would be OK. So after a while some guys came in and they took turns "playing" my bass. By "playing" I mean that I could have easily described what they were doing as beating on the sides, back and top of the instrument, interspersed with traditional plucking of the strings. Sitting in front of the stage, watching, and not able to get up and stop what I was pretty sure was going to be permanent damage; another bass player friend of mine, Cheryl asked me "Is that YOUR bass those guys are destroying up there?" Not at all sure what to do since the crowd was obviously enjoying the performance, I decided to just wait and hope it would end soon. After they finished I carefully checked the instrument and was amazed to find only fingerprints. I found out later those guys where some members of Sun Ra's group who were in town to play a concert.
I have tried to use slap technique on my acoustic from time to time and have occasionally tried using my thumb on my electric, but I am not particularly good at it. I needed to come up with a screen name for an internet account. One day I was watching Mary Poppins with my kids and heard the banker/ father character refer to singing in a derogatory way as "caterwauling". I thought I'd twist that term a bit, since I'm a bass player; and use it to describe not particularly good slap bass playing as "catawallupin".
