If you are being accused of a crime, the law provides various ways to protect you. For example, you have the right to be tried by jury, you have a right to a speedy trial, you have the right to assistance of an attorney, and you have the right to not be forced to testify against yourself or to provide evidence to the police or prosecutor. A police officer may arrest you if he sees you violating a law, if he has good reason to believe a crime has been committed and you committed it, and the crime is a felony or for certain misdemeanors.
