An estimated 2 million women and children are held in sexual servitude throughout the world, and between 800,000 and 900,000 are trafficked across international borders for the purposes of sexual exploitation each year.

THE HISTORY OF CAPTIVE DAUGHTERS
Captive Daughters is the first anti-trafficking group established in California. We focus solely on ending the sexual bondage of women and children. The organization was inspired by the founding director's stay in Nepal, where she learned firsthand about sex trafficking. Upon returning to the United States in 1995 she began researching trafficking and discovered a fragile network of groups struggling to educate the public on trafficking both here and abroad. In an effort to strengthen that movement, she and a committed group of individuals established Captive Daughters as a non-profit organization in 1997.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OUR LOGO:
• The scallop shell is an ancient symbol honoring female sexuality and birth. This beautiful symbol reminds us that for centuries the Female has been honored and must continue to be protected from gross violations of female sexuality and body rights such as trafficking and sexual exploitation.

To combat sex trafficking, much more information is needed to understand the root causes and conditions that create a need for a supply of trafficked women and children. Without this information, those who are motivated to exploit and use trafficked victims will continue to remain a mystery. By understanding the dynamics of demand, we can develop the legal and political policies necessary to control and end this horrific practice.
