Public Access TV producer.
Celebrated comic talent and elaborate sets are no
substitute for good comic writing. I don't have to
tell you that. But when was the last time you saw good
writing try to stand on its own?

It works, as evidenced by the Mr. Sandman Show---a
public access TV Show produced in Roanoke, Virginia,
where it airs Tuesday and Sunday evenings (10:30 and
7:00, respectively) on Cox cable channel 19.

For producer Kenny Hicks ---a.k.a., Mr. Sandman---
having a big budget is not an option. But he proves
you don't need expensive props or professional comic
actors to produce great skit comedy.

As director, Hicks likes to use real places, real
events, and even the real people who happen to be
there. In addition to saving big money, this gives his
comedy skits a degree of realism seldom seen
outside big-budget movies and reality TV shows.

As writer, the ever-resourceful Hicks also likes to
focus on the seedier side of culture, where low budget
is a way of life.

In a skit called "Jeb and Darrell's Volunteer Fire
Dept.," Hicks and regular co-star David Hawkins play
two hillbilly firefighters whose equipment consists
of items like garden hose, yellow rain coats, and a
red pickup truck with a ladder rack.

In "News 19 Exclusive," the camera follows TV news
journalist Giraldo Riviera (played by Kenny's brother,
Lewis Hicks) into a dimly lit, smoke filled garage
(the same garage used as a firehouse in the above
mentioned skit). Inside we witness a brutal and
inhumane sport: fish fighting. (No Bettas were harmed
in the making.)

In terms of pure entertainment value, the Mr. Sandman
Show equals or even surpasses network comedy-variety
shows like Saturday Night Live and Mad TV. In place of
famous-name music groups, for instance, the Mr.
Sandman Show offers fictitious bands with lyrics
designed to make you laugh. Not a bad trade-off if you
ask me.

What Hicks lacks in money and available talent, he
makes up for in meticulous editing, sometimes shooting
a scene two or three times to get a variety of camera
angles. Of course, cheap props and bad acting often
deliver an imperfect illusion. But this only serves to
remind us that good comedy doesn't need polished
actors or convincing props.

If you live in Roanoke or one of the handful of other
cities where the Mr. Sandman show airs (including
Burbank and Honolulu), consider yourself blessed. If
not, contact your local cable company pronto. Then set
your VCR.
