A record of my visit to Olympia in part, the journey and what motivated me to visit. More importantly, it is a tribute to the complex ideals of Ancient Olympia, its physical, spiritual, religious and aesthetic aspirations.

It is a journey which dates back to ancient times, travelled time and time again by foot, wheel or hoof by those who believed in an ideal and were thus motivated. In this case it is by wheel, 3 of them, but under human power, not petro-chemical.

The music is Laurie Anderson's O' Superman (1982) remixed by an unknown and then edited by me to help highlight those lyrics which assisted the idea of a journey in pursuit of an ideal and a message still relevant to modern man. The lyrics "Oh Mum and Dad" can just as easily be heard as "Oh Modern Man", which is more in keeping with the underlying ideas of the clip.   less

The statue is ...   more High above the town of Kyparissia is a statue, overlooking all within sight, including the castle ruins which feature in this video. The statue is of a woman holding a dead child. It was here that Greek mothers took their stand against Turkish oppression and abduction of their children, preferring instead to commit suicide with them rather than surrender their off-spring to the Ottoman Empire, never to be seen again.

The theme of this video is peril. The music by Rene Aubry is entitled, "Peril", fitting well with the sacrifice of the mothers long ago, the dangers which the Castle represent, and the perilous nature of the descent by trike from the heights of the lookout overlooking Kyparissia.

Twice on the run down I was surprised by cars coming in the opposite direction. At one point I was caught on the wrong side of a blind corner and only a luckily placed side street acted as a safety point to avoid a collision.

The first part of the descent needed the utmost caution. Like the castle which was erected for protection, danger was ever present from below.

Most of all though, Kyparissia, with its castle and history, tells a story of danger and sacrifice.   less
