The 2004 self-titled Honest Jons/EMI reissue of Candi Statons 1969-1973 Muscle Shoals recordings was a surprise worldwide hit, making it to the pop album sales charts in England, France, the Netherlands and Japan. In a genre that considers 5,000 in sales a respectable hit, Statons project sold over 100,000 copies. The press on the out-of-print tracks was jubilant. It gained rave reviews in everything from the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal & Constitution and the Boston Globe to the youthful Blender magazine. The album also made the year-end Top 10 lists of Rollingstone, Tracks and Downbeat which hailed the collection a 5 star masterpiece. Staton capped the press off with a sold-out five city European concert tour in April in which she sang most of the compilations songs with a fervent live band. A reporter for Mojo caught her London show and wrote, the lady and her voice are simply awesome.

We decided to capitalize on that momentum, says Mark Ainley, who runs the Honest Jons label in London, By recording a new album of southern soul on Candi that will have a decidedly darker feel than her past works. Between Statons sales and the press, EMI decided to invest in Statons first secular CD in 23 years. Staton went into the Nashville studio of Lambchop sideman, Mark Nevers, and will recorded the project which debuted in April 2006 and reached #15 on Billboard's Blues Album sales chart.

The musicians on the project have the highest pedigree. Chip Young, who has played on sesssions with everyone from Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson to Reba McEntire, is providing acoustic guitar. Barry Beckett, from the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, played piano on Statons debut LP Im Just A Prisoner in 1969 and this will be their first pairing since that time. Tony Crow, a founding member of Nashvilles hyrbid band, Lambchop, will also provide keyboards.

Uprright bass player Dennis Crouch played on June Carter Cashs final CD and has also collaborated with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Dolly Parton. Al Willis is an electric guitarist steeped in black gospel with his credits dating back to Shirley Caesars classic Hold My Mule in the 1980s. Lastly, Statons son Marcus Williams, has taught drumming workshops at Berklee School of Music and has toured with Isaac Hayes, Peabo Bryson and others.

Aside from several personal songs written by Staton, the project featured new songs written specifically for Staton by indie rocker Will Oldham and others, and obscure cover songs that boasted new twists and turns.

Staton's new CD "Who's Hurting Now?" is less country and more blues-rock than the last CD. Aside from some of her own compositions, the project highlights new songs by Will Oldham, as well as, chestnuts by Mary Gauthier and others.
