Nurse manager Kim Downer has put her degree to good work, building her career and renovating the emergency room at Lawrence General Hospital. When she started the master's degree program at Cambridge College, Downer was already a mid-level manager. Her title was clinical coordinator of the emergency room." Downer hadn't yet earned her master's degree when she was promoted — she was still taking courses. Nevertheless, she posits, "I definitely think that being enrolled at Cambridge College at the time I applied for the position put me ahead of the pack. It was looked upon very favorably, both among the groups that interviewed me as well as among the management team." The Cambridge College classes she was taking allowed her to be successful once she actually stepped into her new role. Literally, she says, "everything I learned Wednesday night, which was class night, I practiced on Thursday. Without that, I'm not sure I would have been as confident about my ability to take on the role, or have been as successful in it."

Martin Forgwe has just finished his master's degree in mental health counseling from the Cambridge College School of Psychology and Counseling. Cambridge College was his top choice to pursue his professional credential.
He knows the importance of listening. "What I learned from my courses and internship here is that there has to be that unconditional positive regard, whereby you, the therapist, give the people who come to see you the opportunity to express themselves. You see your patients as people who are worthy; you affirm them and listen attentively to what they are telling you. After that, you help them look at what they have presented to you, and seek solutions."
Martin discovered a unique model of teaching and learning here: "When we learn as a group, as we do at Cambridge College," Forgwe says, "We become a source of support to one another. You come with individual skills that don't remain just in your own mind. You are enabled to share, and the whole group learns. It confirms what we say in Africa: one hand cannot tie a bundle. When people act as a community and do things together, we can overcome the impossible."
