when I open my vitual dub, the black screen doesnt pop up. I have everything plugged in right, except the av cable might be a problem, can i plug in the audio cables to an audio out?

my virtualdub is hooked up the right way to my easycap the right way and everything, but then it still captures a black screen even with my xbox on. another vid its takes a while for virtualdub to capture sometimes? is that true? Please Help.
