rochelletc : Video modeling is a great tool to use, and would most likely be a wonderful addition to your setting. It is important to reinforce the behaviors that you WANT to see when using video modeling. When the student watches the video it actually creates neurological pathways and "mirror neurons" in the brain. If the student were to watch negative behaviors... that is what the brain is picking up. However, if the student is watching the video and is provided tools and strategies in the video to help problem solve when a negative behavior occurs, this will be more likely to carry over in times of stress. Pre-teaching is a wonderful tool prior to recording a video with a client. If you want to collaborate or discuss this further- email me at callotchrissy@gmail.com. Chrissy

Hi Chrissy I work at a Day Treatment Center for children w/RAD SIS OCD Bi polor etc.
I am also a videographer. I was thinking that perhaps a video on consequences for violence w/ a violent RAD client.. My idea is to create a vid of client acting out the routine of him hitting and recieving consequences for his actions. the he could watch the vid and remember "THINK FAST FORWARD". because he does not seem to accociate his actions(violence w/ the consequences. What do you think is this being done ine field? I'm just an Aid no background in theraphy. any links or advise would be helpful.

W7ENK- My purpose is to provide people with information. Please feel free to ask me questions. I will do the best I can to answer them, and if I don't know the answer, I will do some research. I also welcome other readers to provide answers, feedback and strategies. SHARING information to help others is the BEST way to promote occupational therapy. Occupational therapists provide a special kind of interaction with the people we serve. There are many factors that make up the functional components of everyone's lives. These include work, play, leisure, sexual activity, Spiritual, socio-emotional and so much more. In short... everything that includes human function. I am very willing to answer whatever questions you have. Handwriting is one tiny little area of specialty in the profession of OT. Please ask away! :-)

Such a wonderful collection of useful information! Thank you for all the great tips, I can't wait to learn more! Are you open to suggestions, or maybe answering some questions parents or teachers may have about OT related subjects?

One more trick with the chalkboards. My Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) friends tell me that it is great for the kiddos to "blow" the wet chalkboard dry. I do this with the students I work with. It is a great multi-sensory strategy that works many body systems. The SLP's love it because of the exercise it provides for the mouth and face muscles. This is helpful for EVERYONE, but especially the kiddos with Communication Disorder and speech difficulties. Additionally, it is great for any child who needs to strengthen their airway and diaphragm. We OT's and SLP's are sneaky little buggers. We are working the entire body with the simplest of activities that we call "PLAY." I love being an occupational therapist! :-)

I am posting videos using the Handwriting Without Tears chalkboard. I have found similar chalkboards at Michaels, JoAnne Fabrics in the craft section etc. Although, for the quality vs. the $4.95 (I think) cost at HWT... it is definitely worth it to buy them from HWT. The "cheaper" chalkboards you get at the novelty and craft stores are just that... cheap. Another alternative... My dad made me some with recycled wood pieces that he cut to size (trim and all) and chalkboard paint that he bought at a local hardware store. He made me 20 of them for me for 20 bucks. If you know someone with power tools and skills... that is an option. The trick if you make them though... 1. Sand 2.Paint 3. Sand 4. paint again 5. Lightly sand, smooth 6. Add trim 7. sand trim and edges.

Armasmusica, I love the video "Call OT!" I'm looking forward to more songs. Plus, I noticed a little treat at the very end of your "Ergo Newscast" video. I think you have written Occupational Therapy's "jingle." I can hear it on the radio now.... very creative, and a great way to promote occupational therapy. Through MUSIC!!! Thank you! Miss Chrissy
