About this user
In 1987, during a reunion of members of WGNRR in Costa Rica, May 28 was declared as International Day of Action for Women's Health. Since then, May 28 has been known internationally and activities are held worldwide by womens and health groups. In 1999, it was officially recognised by the government of South Africa.
Each year WGNRR in collaboration with members and people who support the campaign issue a call for action to raise awareness and promote solidarity and action on the International Day of Action for Women's Health. In '90, the Call to Action dealt mostly with issues related to maternal mortality and morbidity. Since the late'90s, the topics have been expanded to cover issues like health care, trade agreements, health sector reforms, and AIDS.
From 2003-2006, the Call for Action has been part of the Campaign for Women's Access to Health and has focused on a specific issue in the campaign.
