In light of the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, The Center for Unconventional Security Affairs (CUSA) in collaboration with The Newkirk Center for Science and Society and the UCI Law School held a "Post 9/11: Science, Policy and Law" Seminar Series. The series addressed issues related to intelligence gathering, interrogation techniques, national security preparedness, and civil liberties.
CUSA hosted the second event in the Post 9/11: Science, Policy, & Law Seminar Series on "Preparing for the Security Challenges of the 21st Century." CUSA brought together senior experts with extensive experience in military operations, disaster medicine, information technology and the business community.

National Geographic Emerging Explorer Alexandra Cousteau is part of one of the world's most famous environmental dynasties. She is grand-daughter of legend Jacques-Yves Cousteau who first started teaching her to dive at the age of seven. Today, Alexandra takes that rich legacy of environmental advocacy, exploration and storytelling and moves it forward with Blue Legacy, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that she founded in 2008 to leverage new and emerging technologies to connect mainstream audiences with their local watersheds and their water planet.

There is a growing body of academic, applied and journalistic research that points to a strong relationship between natural resources and conflict in the developing world. Whether attributed to a 'resource curse' in the case of high value, extractable natural resources, or 'scarcity and competition' over water, land, fisheries and other resources, it is clear that natural resources and the environment, because of their importance to human survival, are an important contributor to and victim of violent conflict.
While there are many strategies for analyzing and transforming these sorts of conflicts in the short and medium term, such as negotiations and settlements over specific resources, external interventions that award control over resources, international boycotts of resources funding conflict, etc., sustainability and sustainable development have emerged as a potential key aspect of long term strategies. This talk will analyze, at a very practical level as well as in theory, where this has been and could be successful and where it will likely fall short.
