Hi,

I just wanted to let all of Oscar's friends know that he has passed. We said goodbye to him on April 2nd 2010. Just a month before his 20th birthday. He had perfectly working lungs, eyes, heart, and liver but his kidneys were done. We can't help but wonder how much longer he would have lived, or at least how much better quality of a life he would have had, had he never eaten the by products, and animal fat which contains pentobarbital in it. He will be watching over your babies from above.

Some websites do provide very useful information on how to cope with, and handle cats with CRF, but they are in it for profit. These website receive kick backs, and "donations" from the food manufacturers to put them at the top of their list and by not wiping them out by listing what's HORRIBLE about them. I.E. That they contain BY PRODUCTS.
While they claim that their story is just a "personal one' this couldn't be any further from the truth. Often you'll see that they FAVOR by product filled prescription foods, who's selling point is "low phosphorus", or "low protein", or "low ash". Look at the bottom line cause of CRF. It is UREMIC toxin build up that has destroyed the kidneys. "TOXIN". Now why would you choose a food that contains 0.4% less ash, or phosphorus but loads them up with more toxin? When you could feed a food that contains the same or maybe 0.1% more ash and has NO by products, fillers, and animal fat, ALL of which the FDA proved to contain PENTOBARBITAL, which is the drug used to euthanize animals. I suggest that if you have a cat that is suffering from ANY symptom you first see a holistic vet, and obtain their opinion first. Also, you need to do your own homework, and read between the lines. The pet food, and vet industry are both are billion dollar industries that are there simply for profit off of illness. No sick animals,=no income!
During the 9 years+ that I treated my cat with CRF I tried both the vets prescription foods/meds and protocol and my own on 4 separate occasions and months apart to insure the testing was accurate. Oscar's BUN and creatinine would elevate each and every time we attempted their regimine. A total of four instances. As soon as we'd return to holistic herbs and CLEAN pet food with slightly higher ash and phosphorus his BUN and Creatinine would lower significantly. This showed me that the most critical thing was to feed CLEAN foods and to get those clean foods with the lowest ash and phosophorus you could, even if it wasnn't as low as prescription diets. They have a new trick now. It's to confuse you with DMA which is dry matter analysis vs wet food. I cannot possibly type everything about this very confusing and mis leading information here so I'll just tell you this. The foods I feed are as follows;
Honest Kitchen "prowl"
Wellness Core
Solid Gold
Also when you call the food manufacturers to obtain the data, you will be told one thing. When you view the bag, and what it contains, you will see another. When you ask for it all in writing, that is an entirely different story. When you look them up online, nearly everything is incorrect when it comes to phosphorus and ash IF they even list it.
Here's an example of the food comparisons that I did.
FIGURES ARE FROM THE MOST RECENT BAG OF DRY FOOD AS OF JAN 2011.
On side of BAG of HILL'S KD RENAL PRESCRIPTION DIET which contains BY PRODUCTS and ANIMAL FAT.
Protein: 28%
ASH: 5.0
(had to get this % figure from a bag at the VET b/c NO where online could we find it and what was posted is lower than what's on the actual bag. Not even on their own website.
PHOSPHORUS: 0.65
(online it claims to be much lower)
Phoned in figures:
Dry matter %
Ash: 4.6%
Phosphorus: 0.49
magnesium: 0.058

IF YOU at least try one of the non prescription foods, your cat is eating it, and his/her blood work shows an improvement, than why not stick with that food? Just because a VET suggests a food doesn't guarantee that it's the best thing for your pets! Ask why? Look into why. Research. I did. I spent 9 years researching this to help my cat live until he was 19 yrs old with CRF. He went through hell, especially when we'd put him on the VETS diet, meds and protocol. But again, I emphasize that you too cannot do this without the help of a vet for not only fluids but blood work and IV fluids when your cat crashes, if he does. There is no perfect way to treat this illness but our country has allowed a HUGE flaw in way of our pet food and it needs to be changed. Especially when it comes to VETs selling it. Aren't we supposed to be able to trust our Doctors?
