The Sims 3 is a great tool for building houses, but EA has hidden some features. This video shows 7 tips that will help you build better houses. In the end I make a small outhouse using all the methods.

Methods:

Move Objects Off Grid - Hold Alt While Moving An Object
Rotate Objects 360 Degrees - Hold Alt While Rotating
Diving Board - See Video
Custom Pool Textures - Apply floors/walls to the pool as you normally would for floors/walls on land.
Edit Room Size - Click on a side of a wall and drag. (Hand Tool)
Half Floors - Press Control+F when a floor tile is selected. Press it again to disable.
