Post-harvest food loss in West Africa is estimated at between 10% and 40%, depending on who is talking. No matter the actual figure, crop loss at any level is a serious problem in a region that, for the most part, experiences consistent food shortages. Low tech (plastic bags); low cost (about $200 for a demonstration); and highly effective, if the excitement of the women I saw is anything to go by. This short video was compiled from stills shot by WASA's COP, Edo Lin and Peter Bloch, and the soundtrack is a recording of the reactions to the demonstration.

What does the decision to renew the patent protection of an invention depend upon?
The video presents some of the factors determining the lifetime of a patent using the technique of System Dynamic Modelling.
The presentation was put together by Sebastian Derwisch who is a consultant to the CGIAR Central Advisory Service on Intellectual Property. It forms part of a research project CAS-IP is supporting to better understand IP in the context of development. The overall goal/vision of CAS-IP is to enable access and use of CGIAR products for the benefit of the poor through effective IP and technology transfer management.
