This is the kind of sequel that this series needed. If SE came out with a sequel now ,it be hard to actually have anything better than this.
I know you'll never release the 98%, but I'm glad you made the movies. At least it provided the necessary closure.
Yes, SE has the right to do what they did, but antagonizing your customers is bad business, and sooner or later it comes back to bite you. What would SE lose by allowing CE to be released? Unless they're planning to release their own Chrono sequel along the lines of CE, which, based on their tepid attitude toward it as of late, I highly doubt. Allowing CE to continue would, in my opinion, have been a show of good faith to the many Chrono fans SE has neglected for the past several years.
That being said, the CE team made the right decision to comply with SE's demands. I have no doubt SE would have gone forward with some type of legal action, and no matter how much I wish I could have a copy of CE, it would not be worth it for the team to suffer the immense financial and personal consequences for my own entertainment.
Yes, you're correct that that CE does violate SE's copyrights, since they're using SE's original work and then modifying it to their own ends. Legally and morally, they were in the right in stopping CE. However, SE's actions in this case show what I've found to be a broad-based problem with companies, particularly software companies: more and more, they are treating their paying customers and fans as criminals, rather than as their bread and butter. One need look no farther than draconian copy protection schemes for all kinds of software.
I definitely agree with what you're saying, but a project like this totally undermines the whole point of copyrights. It's an unfair system, and I definitely agree that with no profit intended from this, it's complete and utter crap that these guys aren't even allowed to let others enjoy the fruits of their labor. But what's to stop someone who grabs the ROM from decoding it, putting some of their own stuff in it, and then trying to sell it? Not even just some hack kid from Nowhere, USA, but another gaming company? Someone in another part of the world getting credit and profit for everything the CE crew did where the U.S. copyright laws don't reach? I know, seems unlikely, but that's what the C&D is all about, cause there are some assholes out there willing to spoil the good time for everyone else.
Seriously, man. If you still feel compelled to go with their bullshit C&D order, do at least something to get back at them. They totally deserve it.
