g87skyhawk: Yes SSRI's do help some autistics with SIB. For others, it can make them worse. Still others may need a combination of SSRI and stimulant (if they don't have seizures). Or a low dose of both, if seizures are well controlled. And still more, there are some that benefit from norepinephrine plus serotonin drugs like low dose effexor. I always try the natural therapies first and still use them, along with nicotine patch. Still give him l-tyrosine(as needed), 5-HTP (as needed) and 2 caps Kyolic Garlic daily.

I have been a coach (gymnastic) many years to healthy kids. I have been introduced to a very special school' director four years ago, since I am also working with autistic children too. With the teachers help we have built up a program especially design to autistic kids. I have been lucky to see some of the children to progress rapidly (including kids with severe autism and SIB)! We use all the equipments what we using for gymnastics programs (including vaults, bars, beams, tramps). I am not sure how it works in America, but would be worth to find out if any of the clubs in your area would provide similar program for James. You are doing an incredible job and wish you all the best in the future! Go Jamie!

Congratulations! Your hard works paid off. Keep up the great works, mom jobs never end. No one can do a better job than moms who had been doing it for years; especially for complex severe adult child with multiple disabilities.

I saw the latest video on how you and the nurse said Nicotine Patch calms Jamey--has it reduced the seizures? I'm so happy to see him having fun in these therapy sessions!
Do high doses of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) help with SIB's? You have mentioned that natural supplements (e.g. L-Tyrosine) or certain medications (e.g. Nicotine Patch) can help with severe behaviors. We both know that antipsychotics just don't help in the long run. The EPS, Dystonia, and/or Tardive Dyskinesia resulting from too much dopamine antagonists is just horrible. Thank you so much for the video--I agree that music therapy and sensory activities are helpful for those that have autism.

Our son is 8 and non verbal autisic, he hits his own head in frustration with the back of his own hand, it concerns me as he gets older he will hit himself harder.. but i put my hand in the way when he does it at home.
He doesnt do it all the time, and is loving cuddly and playful, i know its frustration....because he cant say what he wants, he has to show, in those moments....he cant show me for instance 'again' ..but he can type now thanks to' youtube'...honest!....he loves classic 70's 80's cartoons bagpuss etc, and will grab a dvd box take it to computer and copy the letters into the search bar....its amazing, cant wait to use some type to talk technology for him.
thanks for your vids, they touch my heart hope all is well
peace

To: vocal masters: How funny, we were just all taking about Jamey's incredible "peripheral vision." You are SO right about that..and yes, I agree it's an overload for him to look directly at something. Sometimes, however, he does stare at us, when he's super calm. Interesting.
