Samson Allan Saeni, aka SHARZY, is in his mid 30’s and is the eldest in a family of six. Melanesian in race, he was born and raised in the Solomon Islands and came up with the name ‘Sharzy’ because it means ‘Brother’ in his mother-tongue.
His interest in music started in his childhood and continued all through out his adolescence. In 1995 he began his musical career as the lead vocalist for a local Solomon Island group called ‘Two 4 One’. When the band broke-up three-years later, Sharzy continued as a lead vocalist for another local band called ‘Amrock Solid.’
It was in June, 2001, that he stepped up and recorded his first solo album – bringing with it his own unique style of music. This first recording, ‘Aloha,’ was released in 2002 and was an instant hit all over the pacific especially in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tahiti, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Another two albums followed, this time recorded with Mangrove Production in New Caledonia - ‘Aelan Feeling’ and ‘Aelan Wei’ were just as, if not more, successful than his first as they ensured that Sharzy became a household name.
Amongst his numerous tours around the pacific, he has performed for his fans around Papua New Guinea commencing in 2005 when he toured to Madang, Lae and Port Moresby. The following year in 2006, he accompanied the CHM Supersound Band on their Legends Tour to Cairns and Thursday Island, performing alongside Papua New Guinean artists’ dAdiigii and Khris Kassimis. In 2007, he came out with another hit recording entitled ‘Hem Stret’ which spawned popular tracks such as ‘Bai Yumi Hau’, ‘Rainy Lae’ and ‘Buka Meri.’ These hit songs made audiences have a feel of Sharzy’s evolving musical style which, much to the delight of many Papua New Guinean fans, adapted bits and pieces of our local pop tunes with the help of some local artists such as Kiki Geno MBE and incorporated them into his. ‘Iu Mi Flow’ came out in 2008 and embedded the name Sharzy to be the ‘King of the Pacific’ by reinforcing his popularity with songs like ‘Ta’u mai’ and ‘Wan.’ Once again, he has proven that he still has the style that has made him a bestselling artist catering to the taste of the majority.
And just when you thought he’s done with his style evolution, he does it again with his recently released album ‘Pacifican Beauty.’ In the lyrics of one of the tracks on this album, he sends an open invitation to everybody to ‘let me take you for a ride.’ From an album review I recently conducted, I can guarantee that it certainly is well worth taking this musical ride as Sharzy catapults his music to the next level. Exploring western influences combined with island pop, this album is probably one of the year’s best if not the best! This album was put together through modern technology and software deftly manipulated by the hands of expert sound engineers. There are a few tracks on the album that feature heavy techno bass beats, robotic voice effects, and soft echoes on the vocals that give it that international edge. There are ragga rhythms done by D’pleza that are pretty much on par with current international favourite Sean Kingston which I’m sure will not go unappreciated by the party crowd and those that get a kick out of this style of music.
Yet Sharzy continues to maintain his Melanesian roots by evoking passionate island feelings ignited by the strumming of a few well chosen chords from the acoustic guitar and not to forget to mention the effective use of the keyboard (which is a recurring theme in a lot of the music that comes from the Solomon Islands and has always played an instrumental note to define what Sharzy’s music entails). As is always the case with Sharzy’s music, it definitely has a lot of danceable tracks, easy listening and sing-along lyrics that are catchy – one such example to listen out for is: “Aiyo Lewa, yu em yu lush ya…”
As the album title states, it is a compilation of tracks dedicated to all pacific beauties and features lyrics composed in dialects from Fiji, Hawaii, Irian Jaya, Roy Island, Solomon Islands Pidgin and PNG’s own Motu and Rigo.
His music is on iTunes and on the airwaves across the pacific, his video clips on music television programs, his name on everyone’s lips… you definitely need to make a home for this album in your collection. Sharzy – volume 7 – ‘Pacifican Beauty’ - Coming soon to a shop near you.
