Habitat for Humanity of Taos, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to build decent, affordable homes in partnership with needy community members. We were founded in 1993, and we are an affiliate of the ecumenical, Christian housing ministry Habitat for Humanity International. We operate under the Habitat Affiliate Covenant, but we are independently-run and raise all of our own funds.Habitat's mission is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness and to make adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. We believe that every person deserves a simple and decent place in which to live and grow. We invite people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need and for families in need.
Habitat operates through a network of caring and involved community members. Volunteers provide most of the labor. Many of these volunteers hail from outside organizations all over the country. Their work here benefits both our cause and the tourism which funds much of our community. Individual donors provide necessary funding to continue building homes for the less fortunate. The Habitat ReStore is supported by individuals and local small businesses who donate building materials, appliances, furniture, and other household and yard items (everything but clothing). These items are sold at considerably reduced retail prices, and ReStore profits go towards furthering construction. Community partners apply for their homes, and our Family Selection Committee approves applications based on criteria such as level of need, income relative to the median income, willingness to become partners in the Habitat program and ability to repay a no-interest loan. Partner families put 500 or more hours of "sweat equity" into their homes and the homes of others. Habitat houses are sold at no profit and without any interest charged.
It's all about the "Hand Up - Not a Hand Out"
