Coming to America cover by Jeff with his kind permission. Check his video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brSnkW...
"Life is like a box of chocolates. America is also like a box of chocolates, You never know what you're going to get"; everything is a surprise. My first day in America was a good example.
When I arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, my landlord Tom welcomed me with a big smile and a big hug. Americans are always hugging. I almost fell over backwards when he finally let go of me.
At his home I was hugged again—by his two huge dogs, who jumped on me and licked my face! Dog breath is worse than garlic breath. Tom said "down boy!" I thought he was talking to me, so I sat down on the ground.
Then, we went to a grocery store. It was so big and everything in the seafood section was already dead. When I was ready to pay, I tried to bargain. The manager said, "This is not --a flea market!"
Later, we went to a Chinese buffet. All the dishes looked foreign to me and everything there tasted sweet. I never heard of "Egg foo young" or Goo Goo Gi Pan.
My fork was halfway to my mouth when Tom said "let us say grace". I said "Grace". Tom lowered his head and said: "Thank you, Father, for the food." "Father, where was his father?" Father?
During the dinner, I expressed my thanks by saying something nice.
I said, "You look fat", which means in China "you live a good and healthy life." But they said nothing.
Then I repeated loudly, "YOU LOOK VERY FAT!" This time they turned red in the face and looked around to see if anyone else heard me.
For a long time, no one uttered a single word. Then we rode home in silence.
When we got home, they showed me to my room and said "good night".
I was in my room, and feeling tired and so confused. Then I took off my jacket, and felt something in my pocket. I took it out. It was the fortune cookie from that Chinese restaurant. What an interesting American invention! I opened it, and out came a little slip of paper. It said: "Don't think about it now; after all, tomorrow is another day!"
