McCartney woke up with this melody in his head sometime in 1963. It sounded so familiar that he played it for several friends, who said they never heard it before. He worked on it over and over and finally came up with the words in 1965. "Mother Mary" is mentioned in "Let it Be" not "Yesterday...

@zenithdoom Exactly. Some may be better technically, but Ringo was a perfect fit. He added to the ugency of the music and had a great variety of styles. No one sounded like him.
