Strassmann with Otto Hahn in 1938, identified barium in the residue after bombarding uranium with neutrons, which led to the interpretation of their results as being from nuclear fission. Straßmann was recognized by Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial as Righteous Among the Nations. So he was pro-Jewish. Fission was known in the '30s.
