Welcome to the BROTHER OUTSIDER page on YouTube! Winner of the GLAAD Media Award and Audience Favorite Prizes at LGBT film festivals in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, BROTHER OUTSIDER is a feature-length documentary portrait of Bayard Rustin, a visionary activist who has been called the "unknown hero" of the civil rights movement. A tireless crusader for social and economic justice, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. and the architect of the legendary 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. BROTHER OUTSIDER reveals the price that Rustin paid for this openness, chronicling both the triumphs and setbacks of his remarkable 60-year career.

BROTHER OUTSIDER has been described as "poignant" (TIME), "marvelous" (The Wall Street Journal), "powerful and startling" (The Advocate), "rich in humanity and alive with ideas" (africana.com) and "a potent and persuasive piece of historical rediscovery" (Los Angeles Times).

Alex Beam of The Boston Globe wrote that the film "evokes with poignancy the many trials of Rustin -- a beautiful man, a gifted singer, a dynamic speaker, and a successful civil rights leader -- who never attained the stature of King, Ralph Abernathy, or Jesse Jackson, primarily because he was gay at a time when homosexuality was fodder for blackmail."

Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, BROTHER OUTSIDER has been shown at hundreds of schools and community centers; at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; at the United Nations; for members of Congress; and in numerous countries around the globe, including India, Switzerland, Poland, England, Italy, Iceland and South Korea.

LOGO has selected BROTHER OUTSIDER to kick off its 2008 documentary season, with the premiere broadcasts timed to coincide with Martin Luther King Day. To find out more about upcoming broadcasts or to view a trailer for the film, visit www.logoonline.com.
