Latin America and the Changing Macroeconomic Landscape Play

While the likelihood of major threats—such as the breakup of the eurozone—have been greatly reduced, Latin America stills faces tough challenges on the road ahead, including the tightening global financial conditions as Fed tapering proceeds, a potential slowdown of the Chinese economy, and the need to raise productivity and the mediocre growth potential in the region.

On April 10, the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings and JPMorgan Chase hosted a forum, "Great Seattle's Global Identity: Building and Sustaining a Competitive Region" focused on this new endeavor. Speakers at the forum provided context on the region's position in the global marketplace and offered insight into how area leaders are working together, and with international partners, to expand global trade and enhance Seattle's economic prosperity.

The Future of U.S. Health Care Spending Play

On April 11th, the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at Brookings brought together several experts to discuss three questions that will also be addressed in a forthcoming series of Brookings papers. The discussion and papers address the causes of the slowdown and the likelihood it will continue; its impact on federal and state budgets, and private spending; and identify reforms that will ensure slow cost growth while improving health.

Global Monetary Policy: A View from Emerging Markets Play

On April 10, the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings hosted Raghuram Rajan, India's central banker to discuss emerging markets' perspective on advanced-economy monetary policies, a subject on which he has been very outspoken lately. Responding to Gov. Rajan's remarks was Charles Evans, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; Vitor Constancio, vice president of the European Central Bank; Alexandre Tombini, governor of the Central Bank of Brazil; and Eswar Prasad, the New Century Chair in International Trade and Economics and a senior fellow in Brookings' Global Economy and Development program.
