The Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, known as His/Her Majesty's Armed Forces or sometimes the British Armed Forces, and sometimes legally the Armed Forces of the Crown, encompasses the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force.
The RAF - Royal Air Force, operates 981 Active Warplanes. (2011) and, as of early 2011, had a total manpower strength of 42,750 Regulars and 2,500 RAF Volunteers. This makes the RAF the second largest airforce in NATO, the largest in Europe and the 5th largest in the world. The majority of the RAF's aircraft and personnel are based in the UK with many others serving on operations (principally Afghanistan and the Middle East) or at long-established overseas bases (Ascension Island, Canada, Cyprus, Diego Garcia, Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and Germany).
The British Armed Forces are a purely professional and volunteer force, with a reported personnel strength in August 2010 of 194,440 professional (Regular) troops and 39,420 volunteer forces. (Total of 233,860 troops). The British armed forces are the second largest military in the EU in terms of professional personnel and reserves. In addition the British armed forces have 191,300 regular reserves. The British Armed Forces have the third highest declared expenditure of any military in the world, only behind the United States and the People's Republic of China.
The United Kingdom has the largest air force and navy in the European Union and the second largest in NATO. It is one of only five recognised nuclear powers, and is deemed to have the second highest power projection capability in the world, behind the United States. In terms of gross tonnage the Royal Navy is the second largest navy in NATO. It possesses an array of ships, such as ballistic missile submarines, aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, guided missile destroyers and nuclear powered attack submarines. Apart from the United States Navy, it is the only Navy currently building Supercarriers. The UK also possesses a large air force which has—and is in the process of procuring—some of the most advanced aircraft in the world, such as the EF - 2000 Eurofighter Typhoon multirole Fighter Aircraft and F-35 Lightning II multirole Combat Aircraft, and C - 17 Globemaster III Transport Aircraft. The British Army has fought in Kosovo,The Gulf Wars. Iraq & Afghanistan in recent years and has been kept updated with modern equipment, such as Challenger II main battle tanks and Apache Longbow attack helicopters.
The Royal Navy is the second-largest navy of the NATO alliance, in terms of the combined displacement of its fleet, after the United States Navy, with 90 commissioned Warships. The Naval Service (which comprises the Royal Navy and Royal Marines) had a strength of 42,700 and is charged with custody of the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent consisting of four Trident missile submarines, while the Royal Marines provide commando units for amphibious assault and for specialist reinforcement forces in and beyond the NATO area. The British Army had a strength of 150,240 while the Royal Air Force had a strength of 46,800. This puts the total number of Active Armed Forces personnel at around 240,000 British Soldiers.

The British Empire lost most of it's Empire after WW1 & WWII because they were massively in Debt & they were exhausted after the wars & they just couldn't afford it, dont forget they holded one-quarter of the world's population. But some countries won Independence & some was given independence.
