About Me:

I have followed professional bodybuilding on and off over the years, mostly in the early 80's, early 90's and again from 2005 until the present. Never a bodybuilder myself, I made a very important purchase at the end of 2009: THE WISDOM OF MIKE MENTZER by John Little with Joanne Sharkey. It started me on a life changing journey. Knowledge is power, especially when it's knowledge about power. Thank you Mike (wish I could have met you), John and Joanne (I do hope to meet you both someday) and all the others whose well reasoned words of wisdom I've been able to absorb. My mind has been opened, and my muscles are expanding.

In 1985, the then 55 year old Albert Beckles showed up at the Mr. Olympia contest in the shape of his life. That's saying something because the 2 time Mr. Universe and Mr. World champion was ALWAYS in amazing shape. Though it was a close fight between Al and Lee Haney that year, I would have given the Sandow to Al. Unlike Lee, Albert's physique was completely balanced. Plus, his biceps were amongst the greatest of all time! Haney's were subpar, and dammit, Mr. Olympia should have great arms!!!!!!!!!! Just saying.
I've featured Albert's 1986 posing routine (he came in 4th that year) because the song was so much better than the one he chose in 1985. I just couldn't play that horrible song on my page.

Another of the greats of the 80's was Roy Callender. He deserved to place in the top 4 in 1980 and along with Tom Platz and Danny Padilla, he is one of the three men who were truly neck and neck in 1981. Anyone of those three men could have won in 1981 and no one would have had a problem with it. Franco...he probably should not have made the top five in 1981 (though he truly deserved his 1975 victory). Here's Roy from 1984. He came into this contest a little smaller, but his conditioning was stellar. As was his posing routine. A legend of the sport.

I'll start with one of the, oh...about 4 or 5 contestants from the 1981 Mr. Olympia who was definitely in better shape than Franco Columbu that year! Again, Franco is one of the all time greats, BUT in 1981 he was way off his mark! Tom Platz came into that show in the best shape of his life! He already had the biggest and most shredded legs in the biz, but in 1981 he brought his upper body up in quality, too.

I make no secret about it: Mike Mentzer is my favorite bodybuilder of all time. Though I think Frank Zane and Arnold are two of the greatest champions in the history of the sport, I feel Mike deserved to win both the 1979 and MOST ESPECIALLY the 1980 Mr. Olympia contests. Though 1980 was one of the more controversial Olympias ever, it is far from the only controversial one. And even that Olympia had more than one contestant more qualified to win over Arnold than just Mentzer alone. During the next few weeks or so, I will feature many of the athletes who are often considered "rightful" Sandow owners. I don't agree with all of them, but many of them I do. AND many of them have simply had enough press to make others believe the hype.

You said two time uncrowned Mr. Olympian, had he not been cheated out of those 2 titles who knows how many he would have won, he could have been a 10 time mr. olympia if he wanted.

Great Channel!
Mike Mentzer, a remarkable man! His training system is just unique, it works! Mike made a startling discovery! He theoretician and practitioner of sports and wonderful philosopher, a great man! The bright memory of him.

The Olympia over, The Greatest of All Time is back on my page, the 2 time Uncrowned Mr. Olympia (1979 & 1980) Mike "Heavy Duty" Mentzer! The man died young, but he died knowing he was right!

The judges got it right tonight: Phil Heath earned the title of Mr. Olympia! Congrats to him and congrats to Jay Cutler for being such a great champion even in defeat.
One mistake the judges DID make: Dennis Wolf should have been top 3! He was better than both Kai and Victor (and they looked terrific!!!). Dennis Wolf looked absolutely spectacular!!!

Hany Rambod has confirmed what I thought was true last night: Jay Cutler suffered a torn left biceps 2 weeks out from the Mr. Olympia. It is a real shame, as he seemed to be on target to reaching his personal best, As it turns out, Mr. Rambod's other client (Phil Heath) did reach his personal best. And WOW, is THAT some kinda special! Heath looked like a million bucks last night! One of the greatest physiques I have ever seen! SO...I think tonight will be very interesting. I believe it will turn out this way:
1.Phil
2.Jay
3.Dennis
4.Kai
5.Victor
6.Dexter
7.Ronny
THAT said: anything can happen! It's a very close contest at this point. I would say that all of the guys I've listed will be in the top 7, but the order could change.
Either way, Jay has shown the heart of a true warrior and a true champion by competing so valiantly while injured. What a great legend in this sport Jay is!
And now begins the Legend of Phil Heath!
