I would start with pyrogallol, completely methyate as usual, the 1-carbon on the aromatic ring is sufficiently reactive so that CH2O/HCL yields almost all the alpha-chloromethyl 3,4,5 trimethoxy product, substitute the chloride for nitrile, reduce as usual to the phenethyl amine.

The rhythm is a pretty fast 4/4 tempo. There is a drum kit and bongos playing the percussion, and you can hear the percussion accent on the 2 beat of the 4/4 count. The 2 beat is the first count of the Mambo.

I still have my father's 45 rpm of their version of "Time Was" (I think...

Agreed. Riddle was on a par with Oliver Nelson as an arranger, neither had an equal. Interesting use of a string section of about 10 instruments, a nice full sound with the electronically induced reverberation. Big bands are not recorded like this any more, unfortunately.
