Synopsis! "Jolene" is a song written by Dolly Parton from her album Jolene (1974), produced by Bob Ferguson. It is ranked #217 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". This video version is performed by "Mindy Smith" from her debut album 'One Moment More'. A few places Dolly Parton appeared in this video without any singing performance. This video was directed by Trey Fanjoy.
"Jolene" tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is trying to steal away her husband. It became her second solo number-one single on the country charts after being released as a single in late 1973 (prior to the album's release). It reached the top position in February 1974; it also was a moderate pop hit for her and a minor adult contemporary chart entry, and was released as a single in the UK the following year, where it reached number seven in the UK singles chart.
Parton has said that the inspiration for the "Jolene" character was a tall, red-headed bank teller who Parton believed was flirting with her husband, and her husband's apparent vulnerability to the teller's charm as indicated by his sudden interest in making frequent trips to the bank. However, Parton has also stated that the name "Jolene" was taken from the name of a little red-headed girl with green eyes seeking an autograph after a concert.
On a side note, in her live performances, Dolly often states she fought this woman tooth and nail for her husband..
About "Mindy Smith" Mindy Smith (born June 1, 1972 on Long Island, New York) is an American singer-songwriter. Her music has a broad appeal and can be classified as all of the following: folk, country, americana, bluegrass, pop, rock, and even alternative. Her voice and music have been compared to that of Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, Norah Jones, and Alison Krauss.
Smith was adopted at birth by a pastor and his wife. She has a brother and two sisters (Shannon, Kim and Don). She grew up on Long Island where she developed a passion for music and began singing at an early age. After her mother's death from cancer in 1991, Smith moved with her father to Knoxville, Tennessee, and in 1994 she moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music.
Smith rise to fame in 2003 when she was the first artist signed to contribute to the Dolly Parton tribute album Just Because I'm a Woman. Her contribution to the project was a cover of Parton's classic "Jolene". Dolly Parton followed by adding backing vocals to a new mix of the song, which was then featured on Smith's debut album that was released in January 2004, One Moment More.
.....Lyrics.....
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you, please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your voice is soft like summer rain And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
He talks about you in his sleep And there's nothing I can do to keep From crying when he calls your name, Jolene But I can easily understand How you could easily take my man But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you, please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can
~.....Instrumental Interlude.....~
You could have your choice of men But I could never love again He's the only one for me, Jolene I had to have this talk with you My happiness depends on you And whatever you decide to do, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you, please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you, please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him even though you can Jolene, Jolene.....End
