About Me:
BASIC TERMINOLOGY
Jumper - a shot of a distance of 7 or more feet can be classified as a jumper (distance wise). So to get a REAL gist of someone's jumper, you would have to take that into consideration.
Midrange Jumper - a shot between 7-17 feet
1. 3 POINTERS MADE
Don't forget to factor in the following...
1. Attempts averaged. If you average 5 or more attempts per
game, you've got a nice chance of making a lot of 3s. This stat can be kinda' overrated to tell the truth without this taken into account.
2. 3P% CAN BE DECEPTIVE
3P% can be very deceptice simply based on the fact that how may you attempt (in most cases) greatly alter the dynamics of 3P%. For example, regardless of shooting ability 9.5/10 a guy shooting 5 3s a game is going to have a higher 3P% than someone with the same ability averaging 1 attempt a game.
3. 3P% IN RELATION TO ATTEMPTS PER GAME
There are tons of examples, but here is one with a GREAT 3-point shooter...
Larry Bird in years averaging 1 or less attempts = 25%
Larry Bird in years averaging over 1 attempt = 40%
(keep in mind that Bird is also one of the best midrange shooters ever and had amazing shot selection)
Examples with guys not known for 3s... (FREE THROWS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS, JUST EXTRA INFO!)
JORDAN
age 24 = 0.6 attempts (13%) 84% from the line
age 25 = 1.2 attempts (27%) 85% from the line
age 26 = 3.0 attempts (37.6%) 84% from the line
If these 3P% represent the shooting purely, then this would be a MIRACULOUS increase for such a short timespan, even for a hard working person. Based on pure improvement, he should be up to 40+% the next year at this rate!
age 27 = 1.1 attempts (31%) 85% from the line
What happened?! Did he improve so much just to get worse?! Or do the attempts have SOMETHING to do with it???!!! (BTW, he explained that he didn't want to fall in love with the 3-point line in an interview around this time)
MAGIC JOHNSON
age 28 = .8 attempts (19%)
age 29 = 2.4 attempts (31%) 91% from the line, BTW
age 30 = 3.5 attempts (38%) 89% from the line, BTW
Questions...
1. Ask yourself, is the 3P% of someone in a year taking 1 or less attempt relevant?
2. Does it matter what your 3P% is in a year averaging .8 attempts????!!!!!
3. What if you made 50% of .8 attempts, would anyone say you were the GOAT 3-point shooter???!!! It works both ways.
4. PROBLEMS WITH 3-POINT SHOOTING IN GENERAL
1. Its a high risk shot, but only with the benefit of 1 point. Ideal 3-point % is 40% and that's the IDEAL. That only illustrates the risk envolved. Making most of your shots creates consistency, which is a very valuable tool.
2. They are addictive. The average player doesn't have the discipline to properly plan his 3-point attempts in the flow of the game because once you make one or two, you feel invincible.
3. You lower your potential free throw opportunities (which is somewhat ironic seeing as how the benefit is an extra point while you lower your opportunities for 2 points in TWO different ways!)
The most contact is around the goal and it thins out the farther you get from the goal. Guys that shoot from deep a lot lessen their free throw opportunities (creating a fear of fouling you being a weapon in and of itself of course). Shaq makes more points from free throws than Steve Nash. That's just an EXTREME example, of course. But
even a lot of 3-point oriented guys who are great free throw shooters, don't get to the line that much anyway because there's less contact the farther you are from the rim. You
are FAR more likely to draw contact from a midrange shot (in the heart of the defense).
4. Its highly glamourized whereas the midrange shot is undervalued.
PROBLEMS WITH NARROW ASSESSEMENTS OF SHOOTING
The truth is, there is a whole WORLD to shooting outside of 3-point shooting and free throw shooting. Lets name a few.
1. Catching and shooting
2. Versatility in the different spots you are comfortable shooting from (not necessarily how far away they may be).
3. Teardrops (runners)
4. Midrange shooting. There is no stat for it.
5. Are you automatic from a certain side?
6. What are your "sweet spots"?
7. Are you automatic from the baseline (for example)?
8. Turnaround shooting
9. Pull-up jumpers
10. Bank shots
11. Shot selection
12. How consistently do you make your midrange shots?
13. If you average 1 3-point attempt a game, what is your 3P% in games
taking 3-7 attempts?
14. How efficient is your jumper overall? (shots beyond 6 feet overall that is).

I posted what I thought about Jones, I don't know what to do against that guy, only upcoming guy is Gustafsson from Sweden in LHW. He may have to move up to face tougher competition. Diaz vs. Condit is going to be insane!!!
Thanks Fu, its always good to introduce someone to something. Unfortunately though, I'm not really great with names in the sport for whatever reason. I'm pretty okay name wise with the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions because I find less of them as exciting as the lower divisions who I generally can just watch any random fight. For whatever reason that hasn't lended itself well to learning their names. What do you think about this Jon Jones kid though? Only formally trained in Greco Roman Wrestling and only 1 loss by DQ and 8 of 14 wins by KO. He even put my boy Machida to sleep, lol.
There was a point I had zero interest in the sport and spoke against it. Now I try to watch every card. Whats your take on the Diaz brothers? Not saying they're the best, but nobody fights like those two, they're crazy,lol.. Happy New Years.
