Così recitava la legge dei gatti, e non perché loro non avessero interesse a comunicare. Il grosso rischio era nella risposta che avrebbero dato gli umani. Cosa avrebbero fatto con un gatto parlante? Sicuramente lo avrebbero chiuso in una gabbia per sottoporlo a ogni genere di stupidi esami, perché in genere gli umani sono incapaci di accettare che un essere diverso da loro li capisca e cerchi di farsi capire. I gatti sapevano, per esempio, della triste sorte dei delfini, che si erano comportati in modo intelligente con gli umani e così erano stati condannati a fare i pagliacci negli spettacoli acquatici. E sapevano anche delle umiliazioni a cui gli umani sottopongono qualsiasi animale che si mostri intelligente e ricettivo con loro. Per esempio i leoni, i grandi felini, obbligati a vivere dietro le sbarre e a vedersi infilare tra le fauci la testa di un cretino; o i pappagalli, chiusi in gabbia a ripetere sciocchezze. Perciò miagolare nel linguaggio degli umani era un grandissimo rischio per i gatti.
