Jamila Bey
Bey is a journalist and comedian living in Washington, DC. Born to a Southern Baptist convert to Catholicism and a non-practicing Black Muslim, Jamila has formally renounced her "confused" belief in the supernatural and is now an out and proud Atheist. Jamila began her career covering government in her hometown of Pittsburgh and moved to DC where she was an editor for ten years at National Public Radio. She's been a writer for hire for the better part of the last decade and is devoted to spreading the gospel of Logic, Reason, and Science to all those who may hear.
Mark D. Hatcher
Hatcher is a PhD candidate of Neurophysiology at Howard University. He formed the Secular Students of Howard University (SSHU) student organization. SSHU is the first secular organization to be held at a historically black college or university. The student organization has been successful in bringing together secular and non-religious students on campus.
Ayanna Watson
Ayanna was born and raised in Long Island, New York. She attended Brooklyn College where she majored in Business Management & Finance and later obtained her Masters in Business Administration and Juris Doctor at Drake University. Although she was raised in a semi-religious household with a Deist father and a Baptist mother, she rarely attended church and her parents did not instill in her any firm religious beliefs.
Ayanna attended a Lutheran-based high school where she was required to study the bible. During this time, her studies of Christianity ultimately led her to reject the bible and convert to Deism. As an undergraduate, she continued her analyses of Christianity and subsequently the realm of general religion. As she realized the impact that religion played in society, particularly in underrepresented communities, she transitioned from Deism to Atheism. Upon becoming an atheist, she further realized the lack of diversity within the atheist community. This realization led her to form the organization Black Atheists of America.
