Poor sparrows? Not really, they are rich with energy for everyone else in the food web...that's what its all about! (2 weeks ago)

Baby owls in the morning breeze
This is from a nest at our facility location in Aurora, CO. You can see this year's family in the Owl Chronicles, which follows a nest much closer than the one from which these young owls came...in fact, one of these "babies" maybe one of the adults breeding this year. (2 weeks ago)

The Owl Chronicles
I believe rabies is restricted to mammals, therefore it does not make the jump to birds. Survivors of the Cain/Able struggle may or may not not grow bigger or stronger, but they may hone or improve other survival mechanisms/adaptations in the process and pass that onto future generations. About H5NI infections in owls I am not familiar with any data, on any virulent disease by chance infecting a healthy predator and killing it, I'm sure it has happened, but again I am not familiar with any real data showing the frequency of such deaths with predators in general or in raptors specifically. The Cain/Able syndrome exists in raptors and that will result in weak siblings being killed/eaten or pushed from the nest...good questions. (2 weeks ago)

This is probably one of the owls that fledged from a very nearby nest last year, and she is used to us coming and going. Therefore, she is fairly tolerant of the photographer. See Baby Owls in the Morning Breeze. (2 weeks ago)
