Robert Battle founded Battleworks Dance Company in 2001 and the company premiered in August 2002 at the World Dance Alliance's Global Assembly in Düsseldorf, Germany. Selected as the American representatives to the festival, the company was chosen for its unique outlook on the future of modern dance.

Since then, Battleworks has performed nationally and internationally at such venues as Dance Theater Workshop, The Joyce Theater, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the River to River Festival's Evening Stars series, and the International Baltic Ballet Festival.
