About Me:

Barts Cancer Centre is renowned as one of the most advanced cancer centres in Europe, providing specialist services to a catchment population of more than one and a half million people in east London and the City, as well as serving as a national referral centre for treating patients from all around the country.

During March and April 2010, patients moved into the cancer centre - the first phase of the new hospital at Barts and a major milestone in the Trusts £1 billion redevelopment project to create landmark new hospitals at both The Royal London and Barts.

Less than three years after construction started at Barts, patients are now being treated in the world-class facilities at Barts Cancer Centre. Clad in granite and Portland stone and designed to blend seamlessly with the grade 1 listed Georgian buildings of the hospital, the new building provides an outstanding new environment for clinical care and key support services.

As well as offering the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures, cancer drugs, stem cell and gene therapies, the centre has a formidable array of state-of-the art imaging, radiotherapy and radiosurgery technology capable of targeting tumours with pinpoint accuracy to minimise damage to healthy tissue.

The nine floor building is also pioneering. 40% of beds are in large ensuite single rooms, the remainder, in roomy two and four-bedded bays, and corridors are wide enough for two beds to pass with ease. Other design innovations have been carefully thought through to improve the experience of patients and staff using the building: chemotherapy rooms, where patients spend many hours receiving their treatment, have been located for the best views of the city, operating theatres are flooded with natural light from double-height windows, and radiotherapy suites have light box art and thickly carpeted waiting areas. The new NHS standards combine with these other design features and granite and Portland stone finishes to create an NHS hospital like no other.

The second phase of the new hospital at Barts will be purpose-built to house our flagship cardiac services. Work started in autumn 2010 and is expected to be completed in 2014.

Meanwhile in Whitechapel, work is continuing on the construction of the new Royal London Hospital, which when finished will be Britains biggest new hospital, providing general and specialist services to east London and beyond. The new hospital has already transformed the cityscape of east London, and it will be operational in 2012 in time for the Olympic Games. The new towers at The Royal London will house the majority of clinical services, including Londons leading trauma and emergency care centre, one of the UKs busiest childrens hospitals and be home to Londons Air Ambulance (HEMS).
