About this user

I love playing the euphonium and listening to good quality brass band and classical music.

My background is in traditional brass bands in England. I started with Darwen Brass Band (now Blackburn & Darwen), then to Woodfalls and Jaguar Cars (City of Coventry) Band. The biggest influences on my euphonium playing at that time were John Catherall (Darwen Band), John Clough (Black Dyke Band) through his many recordings, Trevor Groom (GUS), Lyndon Baglin (various bands) and of course Bob & Nicholas Childs and Steven Mead . I was also a big fan of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, especially the amazing tuba player John Fletcher, who unfortunately died far too early in life.

In 1994, I emigrated to the USA and was fortunate to play principal euphonium in the St. Louis Brass Band. I was introduced to a completely new style of playing. I am continually impressed how many American players can easily play in a variety of styles from Classical, Jazz, Big Band and also how many of the low brass players can easily switch from treble to bass clef and vice versa. This is something I haven't mastered yet!

In the US, I have been fortunate to have been influenced by some of the great American euphonium players, particularly Dr. Brian Bowman who has been very helpful to me. He is an outstanding teacher.

It is slightly ironic that the first time I met David Childs was in St. Louis and then again at IEI 2007 in Atlanta. We never met when we were both in England. David is an outstanding player but also a great, approachable person and a wonderful teacher. David helped me develop an efficient practice schedule and encouraged me to record my playing so that I could hear my strengths and weaknesses.

Based on David's advice, I became interested in using portable digital recorders during practicing to improve overall playing standard. I have found this is very effective for improving individual practice sessions. It is also great for recording band, choir, orchestra or any group rehearsals so that you can study the recordings after the rehearsals. (see http://www.NextStepMusicPerformance.com for more info).
