I love American Sign Language and Deaf culture, and I love watching videos of songs interpreted into sign language.Achieving social justice through ASL and Deaf culture awareness and advocacy.
It is illegitimate to ask, What does our society gain by having a Deaf culture and community? if the implication is that a minority must pass a value-added test or otherwise face extinction or attempts to force its assimilation. Cultural diversity is central to our understanding of what it means to be a human being; each culture lost, each language allowed to die out, reduces the scope of every persons humanity. Intolerance is also almost laughable shortsightedness. Intolerance always contains within it the seeds of self-destruction. (Harlan Lane, 1999, p.237-238)
To that I say, "Amen."
Other things I believe in:
*ASL for Deaf babies from birth
*Schools for the Deaf
*ASL for hearing children as part of core curriculum in all public schools, with Deaf culture as an integral part of that education.
*ASL classes for Deaf children, taught by ASL teachers who are certified teachers, and fluent in the language. (Much like students receive education in English from English teachers who are fluent in the language and experts in the subject matter).
*All medical professionals who have contact with Deaf babies, children, and families should be educated about Deaf culture and should be able to refer hearing parents to resources such as places where they can learn ASL and contact information so that they can get to know members of the Deaf community who can serve as language/cultural role models for their children.
"Re-Defining D-E-A-F" by Ryan Commerson, is a truly brilliant film that *everyone* should see. Hearing and Deaf people: everyone. See it at www.mosinternational.com.
Truth: There is no thought under the sun that cannot be expressed in ASL.

Lyrics of the Day
I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing
Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in
'Cause I got time while she got freedom
'Cause when a heart breaks, no it don't break even
Her best days will be some of my worst
She finally met a man that's gonna put her first
While I'm wide awake she has no trouble sleeping
'Cause when a heart breaks, no it don't break even, even, no
What am I supposed to do
When the best part of me was always you and
What am I supposed to say
When I'm all choked up and you're okay?
I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces
They say bad things happen for a reason
But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding
'Cause she's moved on while I'm still grieving
And when a heart breaks, no it don't break even, even, no
What am I gonna do
When the best part of me was always you
And what am I supposed to say
When I'm all choked up and you're okay
I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces
(One's still in love while the other one's leaving)
I'm falling to pieces
('Cause when a heart breaks, no it don't breakeven)
You got his heart and my heart and none of the pain
You took your suitcase, I took the blame
Now I'm trying to make sense of what little remains, oh
'Cause you left me with no love and no love to my name
I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing
Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in
'Cause I got time while she got freedom
'Cause when a heart breaks, no it don't break
No it don't break, no it don't break even, no
What am I gonna do
When the best part of me was always you
And what am I supposed to say
When I'm all choked up and you're okay
I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces
(One's still in love while the other one's leaving)
I'm falling to pieces
('Cause when a heart breaks, no it don't breakeven)
Oh, it don't breakeven, no
Oh, it don't breakeven, no
Oh, it don't breakeven, no
"Breakeven" by The Script
Peace, all!
