Raised in the small Northern New Mexico town of Wagon Mound, Hector Balderas learned at an early age the values of accountability, respect for others, and creating opportunities for everyone — values he's worked to live up to throughout his own life. Raised by a single mother in public housing, Balderas is the first to graduate from law school in his town of 310 people. As State Auditor, he stood up for New Mexico taxpayers against wasteful government spending, and held public officials accountable when they misused taxpayer money, regardless of their political party. That's one of the reasons why, in a tough year for Democrats, Hector was reelected statewide with the overwhelming support of Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Now, like most New Mexicans, Hector is tired of what he sees coming out of Washington. He's running for the United States Senate to take those same small-town New Mexico values he learned as a kid to Washington — bringing people together to find common solutions and restoring fiscal accountability, so that we can invest in the economy of the future and create more opportunities for the people of New Mexico.
