    @ilikecandy11211 Moss is hardier than grass and can handle poor soil. Healthy grass will push out moss and weeds. I would dethatch, then put moss killer on any remaining moss, then pull out when dead.

    Spikes actually increase soil compaction. The best ones remove a plug of soil and you can get hand operated ones or machines.

    And the point of aerating a law isn't to let water and fertilizer in. That is part of it, but not a complete answer, and it can actually cause the soil to dry out faster...

    MiStaVP05, I agree. The push pull method is the best way and you don't have to clean it off by hand every time.

    And $50 for a thatching rake? You can get them for $25 to $35 locally.
