Personally, I started with text adventures in VB. Doing basic text and variables will let you do some fun stuff like small text-only RPG battle systems really quickly, but if you really want to learn it correctly don't be surprised if it takes a long time to get to 2D graphics and gameplay (and 3D programming is a circle of hell Dante forgot to describe....) At Digipen it's a year before they let students even touch 2D graphics, but some people start way earlier.

Despite all that it's a lot of fun. Once you start making some projects it'll just click and more and more will be available. My suggestion is to stick with it if you want to and it's fun, otherwise it was likely not meant to be. It's hard to force yourself to be a programmer (although some tenacity during the tedious learning phase at the beginning is required.)

You just have to download them.. Virtualdub doesn't really do much by itself, it's just a program that runs a lot of different plug ins.

If you downloaded those already and they don't show up and you're on vista x64 there is a bit of trouble you have to go through... Only the 32-bit version works (which should let you see the x264 vfw) and there's some weird command prompt thing you have to do for LAME.

I use virtualdub, which is free. It can be a bit odd to set up (especially with a 64 bit os) but the quality is really high once you get it configured right. Virtualdub is really just a container for other various encoders - I personally use x264 vfw and the LAME ACM, which is the combination that makes the most sense for higher quality video/sound at a reasonable (and configurable!) size.
