Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide
Welcome
Once your baby is born you may think the hard part is over. But the truth is that the hard part is just beginning. While a typical labor and birth can last 18 (or more) hours, parenting lasts 18 (or more) years! Unfortunately, nothing can prepare you fully for the days and weeks to come. While reading books on baby care can be helpful, there is no substitute for on-the-job training.
Many parents are surprised to find that the excitement and anticipation they felt during pregnancy are quickly replaced by fear and (sometimes) frustration. Even the most confident parents may begin to doubt their ability to care for their baby. The fact is, babies require a lot of work. While parenting is the most important job you will ever hold, it is most often the job for which you will have the least training. You will be required to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year—including weekends, nights, and holidays. There will be no benefits package—no pension plan, no paid vacation, no sick leave. There won't even be a salary. The only compensation you will receive will be a smile, a laugh, a hug, a first word, a first step, a first tooth. And looking back in years to come, without reservation or hesitation, you would do it all again!
Cherish every moment.
