Quote: The best stuff I ever heard is by a bloke called Bobby Parker Robin Trower
Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, but raised in Los Angeles, California, Parker first aspired to a career in entertainment at a very young age. At the Million Dollar Theatre, he saw big stage shows by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billy Eckstine and Lionel Hampton. By the 1950s, after winning a talent contest sponsored by West Coast Blues and R&B legend Johnny Otis, Parker started working on electric guitar with several big name Blues, R&B, and Funk groups of the time with his first stint being with Otis Williams and the Charms. Over the next few years, he also toured and played lead guitar with Bo Diddley (including an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show) recording the record Diddley Daddy at the famous Chess Records in Chicago. While recording at Chess Records with artists such as Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Smiley Lewis, and Noble "Thin Man" Watts, Parker was given the opportunity to not only meet but spend long hours with some of the most famous artists of the time including Etta James, Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Bobby toured and performed with T-Bone Walker, the Big Bopper, Rickie Valens, Buddy Holly, Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles, Little Willie John, Elmore James, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, LaVern Baker, Clyde McPhatter, and the Everly Brothers. In the waning years of the decade, he also toured with Chuck Berry, Little Richard and played bass with Fats Domino.
In 1957, supported by the Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams' band, Parker wrote and recorded the original version of the song You Got What It Takes. In 1959, Marv Johnsons version surfaced, but with the song writing credited to Berry Gordy, Gwen Fuqua and Roquel Davis. Johnson's version was a hit, and was subsequently recorded by many artists, including Marvin Gaye, Freddie Weller, Barret Strong, The Four Tops, The Supremes, and The Dave Clark Five, whose version hit #7 in the US in 1967.
His first single recorded was done in 1958, while he was working primarily with Williams' band, and was titled "Blues Get Off My Shoulder". Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin has acknowledged that "Blues Get Off My Shoulder" inspired him to start singing. "Blues Get Off My Shoulder" was later recorded by R&B/Blues stars such as Little Milton and Dee Clark. During that same year, he also performed frequently at the The Howard Theatre in Washington, DC, The Royal Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland and The Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
Bobby Parker has influenced many illustrious musicians throughout his five decade plus career - Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton to name but a few - but the most notable of all would be The Beatles. John Lennon and George Harrison are on record crediting the guitarist's signature riff which forms the basis of his 1961 classic "Watch Your Step" as being the impetus for the band's 1964 chart topper "I Feel Fine". A variation of the same riff was used in perhaps one of the most enduring songs of the rock era "Day Tripper". A personal favourite of Lennon's, the song was included in a tracklist of 40 records found years later in a portable jukebox belonging to the musical icon. Filled with singles which shaped his musical education, it clearly demonstrates how revered the Louisiana born Parker was to one of the most significant songwriters of the 20th century.
By the early 1960s, Parker had settled into living in the Washington, DC area recording with Lilian Claiborne, Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams and spent time playing around DC at blues clubs there after having left Williams' band for good. He is perhaps best-known for his 1961 hit song, "Watch Your Step," a single for the V-Tone label that became a hit on British and U.S. R&B charts. Parker's song was later covered by several British and American rock & blues groups, most prominent among them the Spencer Davis Group, Dr. Feelgood and Carlos Santana. Due to the success of the song, both in the United States and overseas, he toured Europe in 1968 and recorded his next hit, "It's Hard But Its Fair". Jimmy Page became a fan of Parker's after seeing him perform in a Washington, DC nightclub during a 1972 tour by Led Zeppelin. Page wanted to sign Parker to Led Zeppelins Swan Song Records and offered an advance to fund the recording demos.
Although Parker may not yet be a name as familiar to blues fans as say, B.B. King or Buddy Guy, he's been cited as a major musical influence by some of todays biggest performing artists such as The Spencer Davis Group, The Allman Brothers, Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, John Mayall, Robin Trower, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, drummer Mick Fleetwood, John Lennon and Carlos Santana.
