Somehow, honesty has to be enough. When I wake up with an image in my eye, when my myopic mind can only see as far as the hand before her face, straight reality is all that can get me by. Truth has to be enough. Images that speak, voices that whisper without saying anything but "here I am". Nothing has been done before. Even the same words through different lips are born again. Even different eyes on the same horizon can't see alike.

Life is about knowing when to blink. When can I look away, when can I sleep and miss the least? What if the night is when we should see closer? What if I was a sparrow when I should have been an owl? What is it about the ordinary that reminds me of a memory I'd forgotten? Questions are like photographs I haven't taken, shadows cast before me in the direction of the sun. Weightless moments, defying the law of gravity like it's just a suggestion. Hungry rabbits feeding on starving vultures, because even nature allows the survival of the weakest.

When I wake up too early in the day, my hands feel too weak to lift a camera, too light to push a typewriter key all the way to the paper. I feel like a practicing pianist, playing in silence until the song is heavy enough to make music. Innocence is there before my skin knows what it's touching. Before my eyes know what they're seeing, beauty slips in like a raven through my open window. Before my soul becomes convinced that she was only my heart, I am aware of blood beating in my ears. Before I was me, when I was too young to remember my name, and too old to be forgetting it again, there was only what stood straight before me. Only the light, the absence, and the presence of hope.

I blinked once and it was gone.
