Temporary warping of time? Remember. In the third episode the train he was on fell into a time hole and he saw his brother and what happened to him. Perhaps that happened again but on a much smaller scale.

I'm guessing those floating circles in space create a sort of shield that holds oxygen in from all the planets that they connect with their "tracks".

Altair's chronicles was in essence a prequel by the looks of it to depict what happened before he is demoted to a novice again. Bloodlines was just a journey for him to learn more about the Templars since he didn't appear to know much about them before he was sent to regain his rank as master ass...
