A simple straight incision would have easily done the job without creating such a huge defect. There was no need to use an elliptical approach and remove a chunk of his back. That approach is best suited for small, non-infected cysts. Hope he healed ok.

Looks like a badly infected sebaceous cyst. Not nearly enough pain control. Pain produces stress which taxes the body and makes healing more difficult. Also causes muscles to tense and tighten, possibly resulting in less-than-optimal expression and packing. Was this cultured? Hope he got a goo...
